Country-by-Country Guide
United States
- Restaurants: 18–22% (15% is now considered low)
- Bars: $1–2 per drink or 18–20% of tab
- Coffee shops: $1 or 15–20%
- Delivery: 15–20% (minimum $3–5)
- Rideshare: 15–20%
Japan
- Do NOT tip. It can be considered rude.
- Exceptional service? A small gift is more appropriate.
South Korea
- Tipping is not customary.
- Some upscale Western-style restaurants may include a service charge.
Europe
- UK: 10–15%, check if service is included
- France: Service compris (included); round up for good service
- Germany: Round up 5–10%
- Italy: Coperto (cover charge) is common; small tip optional
- Spain: Round up or leave small change
Southeast Asia
- Thailand: 20–50 baht at restaurants
- Vietnam: Not expected but appreciated (5–10%)
- Singapore: Not required; 10% service charge often included

The Double-Tax Method (US)
If sales tax is about 8–10%, doubling it gives roughly 16–20%.
The 10% Base Method
1. Move the decimal left once = 10%
2. For 15%: add half of 10% to itself
3. For 20%: double the 10% amount
