Percentage Calculation Tips and Tricks for Everyday Life
Master percentage calculations with mental math tricks for shopping discounts, tips, taxes, and more.
Percentages are everywhere — from sales to statistics. Here are tricks to calculate them instantly.
The Flip Trick
X% of Y = Y% of X
This simple rule lets you pick the easier calculation:
- 8% of 50 = 50% of 8 = 4
- 4% of 75 = 75% of 4 = 3
- 15% of 20 = 20% of 15 = 3
Building Block Method
Break complex percentages into simple ones:
Finding 15%
- 10% + 5% (half of 10%)
- Example: 15% of 80 = 8 + 4 = 12
Finding 25%
- Divide by 4
- Example: 25% of 360 = 90
Finding 33%
- Divide by 3
- Example: 33% of 90 = 30
Shopping Discount Math
Successive Discounts
A 20% off + 10% off coupon is NOT 30% off.
- Original: $100
- After 20% off: $80
- After additional 10% off: $72
- Total discount: 28%, not 30%
Quick Sale Price
For X% off, calculate (100 - X)% of the price:
- 30% off $60 → 70% of 60 → $42
- 15% off $80 → 85% of 80 → $68
Percentage Change Formula
Change = (New - Old) / Old × 100
- Salary went from $50,000 to $55,000 → (5,000/50,000) × 100 = 10% increase
- Price dropped from $80 to $60 → (−20/80) × 100 = 25% decrease
