Date Calculation Tricks: D-Day, Deadlines, and Duration

Master date calculations for project deadlines, D-day countdowns, and duration between dates.

Whether planning a wedding, tracking a project deadline, or counting down to a milestone, date calculations are essential.

D-Day Countdown

D-Day counting can be confusing. Here is how it works:

  • D-10: 10 days before the event
  • D-Day (D-0): The event day
  • D+1: One day after the event

Quick D-Day Math

To find D-Day from today:

1. Count the remaining days in the current month

2. Add full months' days

3. Add the event date's day

Business Days vs Calendar Days

Business Days

  • Monday through Friday (excluding holidays)
  • Important for: Legal deadlines, shipping estimates, project timelines

Calendar Days

  • All 7 days of the week
  • Important for: Rental agreements, insurance periods, countdown timers

Quick Estimate

  • 1 week = 5 business days = 7 calendar days
  • 1 month ≈ 22 business days ≈ 30 calendar days
  • 1 year ≈ 252 business days = 365 calendar days

Month-End Gotchas

Not all months have the same days:

  • 30 days: April, June, September, November
  • 31 days: January, March, May, July, August, October, December
  • 28/29 days: February

Mnemonic: "Thirty days hath September, April, June, and November..."

Leap Year Rules

A year is a leap year if:

1. Divisible by 4 → YES

2. BUT divisible by 100 → NO

3. BUT divisible by 400 → YES

  • 2024: Leap year (÷4)
  • 2100: NOT a leap year (÷100 but not ÷400)
  • 2000: Leap year (÷400)

Useful Date Formulas
