BMI Calculation and Health Management

Learn how to calculate and interpret BMI for better health awareness.

BMI (Body Mass Index) is a simple tool to assess whether you're at a healthy weight.

What is BMI?

BMI is a measure of body fat based on height and weight that applies to adult men and women.

How to Calculate BMI

BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)²

Or in imperial units:

BMI = weight (lb) × 703 / height (in)²

BMI Categories

BMICategory

|-----|----------|

Below 18.5Underweight 18.5 - 24.9Normal weight 25.0 - 29.9Overweight 30.0 and aboveObese

BMI Calculation Examples

Example 1: 70 kg, 175 cm

  • BMI = 70 / (1.75)² = 22.9 (Normal)

Example 2: 85 kg, 170 cm

  • BMI = 85 / (1.70)² = 29.4 (Overweight)

Limitations of BMI

BMI doesn't account for:

  • Muscle mass (athletes may have high BMI)
  • Age and gender differences
  • Fat distribution
  • Bone density

Beyond BMI

Consider these additional metrics:

  • Waist circumference: Indicates abdominal fat
  • Waist-to-hip ratio: Shows fat distribution
  • Body fat percentage: More accurate fat measure
